“Mobile phone has revolutionized scientists’ ability to track crop disease and communicate the latest scientific advances to remote farmers” says the article on NYTimes.com on the Crop Disease project, one of the five “quickwin” AGCommons projects.
Delivered by Grameen Foundation, in partnership with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), this project developed an early warning crop disease application and trained a distributed network of rural intermediaries (Community Knowledge Workers) to use the mobile phones for tracking the spread of crop disease in Uganda.
“Mr. Bangirana, 60, a former teacher and village chief, wears a bright yellow T-shirt with the words “Ask Me” across the chest. His community now comes to him with questions about farming practices and health issues, and he can quickly find most answers using Google text messaging and an operator service.”
